I adopted this 14 year old cat from the shelter. They said she was the longest one here and if she didn't get adopted soon she would be put down

Mexicali76 • Senior cats are the best. They don't ask for much, just food and love and a safe place to call home in their retirement, and they give back so much more. 524 > Reply

ornithoptercat • 12h ago Quite simply, the fact that she's 14. Senior kitties are much more likely to have expensive health issues already or in the near future, go deaf, etc. Perhaps more importantly, you've also got to accept the fact that they might not have much time left, no matter how well you care for them.

It's very sad for all the poor homeless senior cats out there, don't get me wrong! But at the same time, it's not right to be mad at people for recognizing that they aren't the right home for a cat that may already have special needs. Nor for recognizing that they should put their own oxygen mask on first with regard to the emotional cost.

My own first cat, who was my ESA, passed away during the pan mic at age 15, and I was absolutely devastated. I don't want to suffer that again for as long as possible, so I'd have had to pass her over, too. Even though she absolutely is adorable and I'm so glad OP is giving her a forever home!

One thing I've heard of shelters doing about this issue is "seniors helping seniors" - they try to place senior cats with lonely elderly folks who are often concerned a younger cat would outlive them. If the shelter you got her from doesn't have a program like that, please suggest it to them!

LiteratureNo7534 • Top 1% Commenter I adopted a 2 year old calico at the shelter. They said she was brought back at least 2 other times. Turns out she was deaf. Which didn't bother me a bit.

When I took her to the vet to clarify it they actually said you can just bring her back, now that you know. Why would I do that? Because her ears don't work? I cannot believe a vet said that to me!! She is now going to be 13 this year and my best friend, spoiled, and all the neighbors love her

If I ever adopted a cat again I would go for the longest one there, elderly, or that random one eyed, 3 legged one no one wants B 846 > Reply

I've had Basil for just over a year now. He was at the shelter a while because he is really shy. They ever had in his description that he was shy and needed someone who was experienced with cats. They weren't wrong, he is definitely shy and concerned about everything but he adores me and my songs I sing to him. 277 ◇ Reply

Revolutionary_Ad3380 ⚫ Same happened with my beautiful boy, Marc who I adopted last summer! He was brought back twice by the same (probably evil) people. They said he wasn't for several days. The shelter did a number of tests and couldn't find any issues. Then I adopted him he had 0 issues with his food intake my beautiful lil cheddar chubbers

ChaudChat • We need more adopters generally but especially adopters willing to home an elderly, or that random one eyed, 3 legged one no one wants so thank you for saying that 36 ○ Reply
